Understanding Chronic Tension

Muscle tension is your body’s response to perceived threat—physical or emotional. When stress or danger is temporary, tension releases naturally. When stress is chronic—or when old threat experiences haven’t been fully processed—tension becomes the default setting. This shows up as permanently tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, a guarded chest, or lower back muscles that never quite relax.

Tension Release vs. Relaxation

Tension release is not the same as relaxation. Relaxation is temporary—it fades when the next stressor arrives. Tension release works at the nervous system level to change the baseline—so your muscles don’t get stuck bracing even when life gets hard.
